Who We Are and Why We're Here. - Mission Statement
Voices of Central Pennsylvania seeks to use high quality journalism to educate the people of Central Pennsylvania about issues that affect them and their community. Effective democracy depends upon informed citizens. Voices of Central Pennsylvania fulfills the Press’s role as a guardian of democracy by investigating issues that receive inadequate attention in the commercial media and by providing a platform for alternative viewpoints. The philosophy of Voices of Central Pennsylvania is that democracy should incorporate the voices of all people, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, political affiliation, age, or wealth.
A call for action and participation.
Voices is of, by and for the Centre County community. We are always looking for volunteers. Some of the skills and duties we could put to work include:
- Photography (Of interesting events we can't get a reporter to or photos assigned to particular stories)
- Reporting (A desire to ask interesting questions and tell good stories)
- Proofreading/Copyediting (Keen eye for detail and a love of the English language appreciated)
- Section Editor (Coordinate writers and production for one section of the paper)
- Web writing (Short news stories)
- Graphic Design (Ads and pages)
- Distribution (About 1 hour a month, 10 times a year and we have routes)
- Ad sales (We will train, and pay a commission)
- Event organizing (annual Fun! Raiser, Arts Fest table, Volunteers Night)
- Data entry (adding to our mailing list)
- Public affairs (distributing the paper at fairs, meetings and other events, talking to groups etc.
We believe many hands make light work. Our promise to volunteers: Tell us how much time you can give and we'll fill it. We'll find a job that suits you best and if you'd like to learn a new skill, we're always willing to train. Contact [email protected] with your interests and for more information.
