Things you can do about health care from Centre Dems

I'm reposting this from teh Centre County Democrats newsletter, because I'm interested in Rep. Peterson. --- Things you can do about health care: 1) Rep. John Peterson (PA-5th) voted against the expansion of SCHIP [the State Children's Health Insurance Program]. We cannot override Bush's veto without Peterson's vote. Our freinds in SEIU [PA's Largest and Fastest Growing Health Care Workers Union] have organized a Candle Light Vigil for Tuesday, October 16th, 7:00pm, at Rep. Peterson's District Office, 1524 West College Avenue [building beside the Waffle Shop]. Please come if you can to show Peterson we want his vote, and to support SEIU for leading the way on this key issue. 2) If you can't go to the vigil, call Peterson's State College office with your opinion: 238-1776 3) The Governor did a great job of explaining his health reform plan, Cover All Pennsylvanians, at his noon press conference today. You can learn more about the plan by going to the website www.gohcr.state.pa.us 4) If you like the plan, please contact your state Representatives and Senators to voice your support. The interests that will oppose health care reform designed to cover more people, more affordably, have money and organization to fight against CAP. To win, legislators need to know we back them up! healthcare

What we can do about health care is not waste our time blindly supporting Rendell's payoff to the insurance companies, but pursue true solutions to this health care disaster. Did Rendell really think he would remain above reproach when he accepted a $100,000 inaugural bash bought and paid for by the Blues? Or when anyone scanned his campaign finances? How about staying free and clear of insurance companies and coming up with a solution that actually helps average citizens and poor people and telling insurance companies to take a hike? They say unions are a thing of the past...I disagree, but I certainly think health insurance companies should be a thing of the past. But that'll never happen under THIS arrangement!

I can't say I know much about healthcare

I can't say that I know much about healthcare, so I have no idea wether the healthcare ideas being put forward by the centre dems are any good at all. I couldn't begin to tell you what Rendell's health care plans and ideas are, either. Maybe somebody will explain them to me. Healthcare policy and insurance seems like such an incredible mess. I wonder if anybody _can_ understand it? I tend to be a bit radical about such things, so when you say "health insurance companies should be a thing of the past", I feel a really strong agreement. But, as an option it doesn't seem to be anywhere in the political discussion. Presumably because the insurance companies are making so much money it's trivial for them to control politicians with campaign donations. Which suggests that to get the insurance companies out of our pockets, we'll have to do campaign reform first. I wish there were more health care providers and doctors around here that didn't take insurance, and charged less. That would be another way to tackle the problem.

Pa singlepayer option is here

go to http://www.healthcare4allpa.org/home.php and see what single payer is all about. last session there were 14 co-sponsors, right here in Pennsylvania. But without guts and some political leadership it'll go nowhere. Rendell's plan keeps insurance companies in the loop, costing us billions. single payer does what medicare has done for years and done well and efficiently - takes them and their profit margins out of the loop. the singlepayer legislation - you can get a copy on the site - was drafted by an attorney who worked 15 years on the side of employers and is now on the side of docs and knows the problems inherent in a system that allows people to sue up the wazoo and docs who charge more than they should. he's covered it all. it's truly very very impressive. take a look. there's even a comparison of Rendell's and the singlepayer bill on the site and all the legislators so far who are supporting it...
