Sacred Harp Shape Note Singing

Location: University Mennonite Church, 1606 Norma St., State College.

Come and learn to sing four-part harmony with shape notes in the Sacred Harp tradition. Since the early 1800's, tunebooks written with shaped notes have enabled generations of singers unable to read traditional music to sing four-part folk hymns, fugues, and anthems. Strongly rooted in community, "shape-note singings" have been held on a regular basis for almost 200 years, and represent a living American tradition. The music is sung loud, characterized by strong rhythms, simple open harmonies, and most recently featured in the movie "Cold Mountain".  Singers arrange themselves facing inward in a "hollow square", singing for each other and not for an audience.

No musical experience or religious affiliation is required, and beginners and listeners are welcome. Song books will be provided.
