The multi-instrumentalist group Rusted Root integrates the Grateful Dead’s jam-heavy rock with percussion influences based on the music of Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
The six-piece band formed in Pittsburgh in 1990 with Michael Glabicki (vocals, guitar), Liz Berlin (vocals, percussion), Patrick Norman (bass, vocals), and Jim Donovan (drums, percussion) as the initial lineup, though John Buynak (percussion, winds) and Jim DiSpirito (percussion) joined later that year. Their indie record “Cruel Sun” debuted in 1992 and was followed by their major-label debut album “When I Woke” in 1994, which went platinum.
In mid-1996, Rusted Root released the Evil Ways EP, a compilation of live tracks with the band’s contributions to the movies “Twister” and “Home for the Holidays.” The group also contributed to numerous film and TV soundtrack credits including “Matilda,” “Party of Five,” “Homicide,” and “Ice Age.” Rusted Root’s second album, “Remember,” followed in October and reached the Top 40 in its first week.
The band released their self-titled album in 1998, followed by “Welcome to My Party” in 2002. An editorial review from wnew.com said the song “Martyr” from the album “Rusted Root” was “a song filled with tribal rhythms, agile finger-picking, and what seemed like a chorus belting out a joyful cry.”
It goes on to say, “Their new album ‘Stereo Rodeo’ is filled with all the different styles you’ve come to expect from Rusted Root and definitely has all the elements you want. From the energetic dance euphoria that “Dance in the Middle” evokes to the powerful epic sound of ‘Weary Bones.’”
The Kin
Brothers Thorry and Isaac Koren are a long way from singing harmonies in the backseat of the car on family trips in their hometown of Adelaide, Australia. The brothers, known simply as The Kin, were following different musical paths until they united to create a song as a wedding present for their father in 2003. Instantly, the brothers knew they’d stumbled upon something amazing. As Isaac said, “After we played together we realized that we couldn’t not do this.”
