“Mongol” is the historical epic about the early life of legendary Genghis Khan. Filmmaker, writer, and director, Sergei Bodrov, tells Khan’s story before his bloody conquering and leadership with which we associate him.Khan, originally given the name Temudgin at his birth in 1162, led a dangerous childhood prior to clinching his powerful destiny. The movie portrays Khan in his youth as a courageous and inspirational leader. It shows his journey from boy to man, attributing much of his success to his strong relationship with his wife, Borte, whom he trusted throughout his whole life as a lover and a guide.
The talented young Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano, from “Zatôichi” and “Last Life in the Universe,” plays Temudgin alongside newcomer KhulanChuluun, who plays the role of his loving wife,Borte. This untold side to the Genghis Khan story was filmed amidst the breathtaking terrain of the historic conqueror’s true birthplace and home. It’s a story of the struggle of Temudgin’s fugitive childhood after the murder of his father and destruction of his home. He finds himself running from his enemy, and in turn, making a new friend and blood-brother, Jamukha, in the process. Temudgin is eventually separated from his beloved wife when she is captured by the Merkits out of revenge for the kidnapping of Oleun, Temudgin’s mother, many years prior.
With passing time and difference of values, Jamukha and Temudgin begin to grow apart and soon become enemies. This becomes the start of an even greater struggle that Temudgin must overcome on his path to becoming one of the greatest conquerors of all time, conquering more territory than any other, who we study from history and know as Genghis Khan of the Great Steppe.
