The electric guitar sound of the decade - oozing, cloudy enveloping - belongs to jazz renegade Bill Frisell…,” says the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Baltimore-born, Denver-raised, Bill Frisell grew up playing the clarinet, but by high school, had discovered his passion for the guitar and Chicago Blues. Frisell studied music at the University of Northern Colorado and Berklee College of Music in Boston, and currently lives in Seattle, after spending ten years in New York City.
Frisell is often compared to Miles Davis and his jazz musical talents. And, other musical influences include Paul Motian, Thelonious Monk, Aaron Copland, Bob Dylan and his own teacher, Dale Bruning.
His first two albums were In Line and Rambler with ECM, and his third album with them, Lookout for Hope, was the debut recorded release of The Bill Frisell Band. In 2004, Frisell released his album, Unspeakable, with Nonesuch, which won a Grammy in 2005 for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. His music has also been featured in several different television and movie productions, including soundtracks for Million Dollar Hotel, Walk the Line and Finding Forrester. We’re excited to bring this Grammy Award winning Jazz Musician and his Trio to State College for what is sure to be a fantastic show!
