Within the walls of Westminster Palace, Elisabetta, Queen of England, contemplates a marriage proposal from the King of France. Politically, this is a perfect match and would be best for her subjects. However, her heart longs for Roberto, the Earl of Leicester. Talbot arrives on behalf of her imprisoned cousin, Maria, Queen of Scotland, seeking mercy from Elisabetta. Seeing as Maria has tried to steal the crown once before and that Roberto is in love with her, Elisabetta’s decision is a difficult one to make.
Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, one of the world’s most exciting singers, takes on the virtuosic bel canto role of the doomed Maria, Queen of Scots. Director David McVicar turns to the second opera of Donizetti’s Tudor trilogy, which explores regal characters at fateful moments of their lives. Elza van den Heever sings Elizabeth I, and Maurizio Benini conducts. Approximate runtime: 3:15
