A new bunch of professional spammers have figured out a way to buypass the spam prevention service, so I have temporarily made the catcha harder for some users.

Just as a test, I may switch it back in a few days.

Paupack Township, Pennsylvania, July 17, 2012

Pennsylvania citizen E. Yager has launched a website intended to help fellow landowners in the state to challenge conditional use public hearings.


Often used to get quarries and other land-altering projects approved by
local government, Conditional Use hearings are also an opportunity for
local residents to voice their questions, comments and concerns over the
hearing¹s topic.


According to Yager, the new website, at www.PaupackTownship.com, is
intended to help educate fellow PA landowners to successfully manage and/or
challenge the decisions being made at these hearings.


³Many times, citizens are intimidated by these hearings. They¹re going up
against corporate interests which can bring tremendous resources to bear on
the situation. The information on the site is publically-available, I¹ve
just put it all in one place.

The "Attack on Public Education"

Several months ago I noted that we appeared about to reargue an issue that for 150 years had been considered settled: whether a free public education is a public good, an essential foundation of a democratic society. Since then, it has become increasingly apparent that the “attack on public education” is not hyperbole; we are in the midst of a serious debate having enormous implications.

The root of this attack has recently become clearer to me, and it goes back at least a generation: the issue is whether or not our students should be taught how to think for themselves.

The Texas Republican Party has helped clarify this by actually taking a stand against the teaching of critical thinking skills. From their 2012 platform: “we oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills, critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student's fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.” Read more »

The Republican controlled House of Representatives, fulfilling their constitutional duty to kill time between election campaigns, voted for the 31st time to repeal all or part of the Health Care Bill. Surprisingly, the vote did not improve their congressional approval rating, which is hovering around 10%.
Smokey Diamond, our investigative reporter, was able to get to Maddy Hatter, spokesperson for the powerful “Beat a Dead Horse Committee.” on a yacht just off the coast of Nantucket.
Maddy was furious. “The plans are,” she said, “to hold roughly 279 million Americans in contempt of Congress.” “They clearly are,” she added, “And they often say as much.” “And, this time we have done the math. There are roughly 314 million people is the US. Subtracting the nearly 4 million babies and multiplying through by the 90% that thumb their noses at Congress, gives us our number. How is that for accuracy and fact checking,” she trumpeted.

Maddy said that the House will spend the time between now and the November election reading the names of contemptuous Americans. “We feel it’s the best thing we can do for the country at this time.” Fox News agrees and, sadly, for once they may be right.

Smokey Diamond, our intrepid investigative reporter, is so fearless that we at Stevieslaw are often worried her “nine lives” might not be nearly enough. Yet, even Smokey has a softer side. Late in the evening, she likes nothing better than to curl up around some warm milk and spend an hour watching the Limerick channel. It’s got lots of Edward Lear and other nonsense read by Fox News reporters. Remember Edward Lear…
There was an Old Man in a tree,
Who was horribly bored by a Bee;
When they said, ‘Does it buzz?’
He replied, ‘Yes, it does!’
‘It’s a regular brute of a Bee!’
I think that deep down Smokey believes that certain poems are easily associated with certain people. I agree and for Smokey I believe we could find something in TS Elliot.
So it really wasn’t that much of a surprise when Smokey found a perfect poem for just how Republicans feel about their presidential candidate, Mitt Romney. We don’t understand why no one had thought of it before. We thank the author, William Hughes Mearns, for anticipating the Mitt with his poem “Antigonish” in 1910. What Republican would be uncomfortable with this description of Mitt:

Yesterday upon the stair
I met a man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
Oh, how I wish he’d go away

When I came home last night at three
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall
I couldn’t see him there at all!

Global Warming Protestors outside Pat Toomey's Office
35 enthusiastic protesters held signs and chanted outside Toomey's office in downtown Harrisburg on July 6, from 11:30-1:00pm.  Our activists' age ranged from 2 to 85 years.  Ed brought a van full from State College,  I brought a couple people from Philly, and activists from York and Harrisburg came as well. We had given a heads-up to Senator Casey's regional office manager, Matt Leonard. He stopped by at noon and we all praised Senator Casey for his vote against the CRA.  You can see the signs praising Casey in the attached photos, but there were lots more signs blasting Toomey.  Ed had called Toomey's office to let them know we were protesting outside their office, and why we were protesting, and invited them to come down and explain Toomey's bad votes, but no one came down. So we decided to go up to his office. Unfortunately, the building guard wouldn't let us in, but he did get Toomey's office manager, Bob deSouza, to come down at long last, where he was grilled by the group about Toomey's bad votes.
