Single Moms

I believe a major issue faced by single women today is the struggle of raising and nurturing their children in a safe, healthy, and happy environment.

It is unfortunate that many single mothers struggle to do everything for their children with little to no support.  Single mothers have it hard when it comes to juggling the responsibilities of a job and being both mother and father in their children’s lives.  They have to find the time to spend with their children while also bringing home the money to support them.  This must be very hard and stressful for them.  A single mother not only plays the role of provider and parent but also friend, playmate and teacher. 

Is it harder for a mother to raise a son than a daughter because she must try to provide, or teach him, the same things that a man would if there was a male figure in the picture?  Do you think that women are capable of teachings boys, male things?  I do not see how they have a choice.  They have to do the best they can to fill those needs themselves.  If they do not then who will teach the child?

Resumes and Discrimination

Are there things that you should not put in a resume so that you increase your chances of getting the job that you want?  The differences in the resumes submitted by two people can be good as it shows where a person’s strengths and skills are.  However, the information on a resume can be used to discriminate.

Single Women in Poverty

In today’s world, it is becoming more common for a woman to be single and a parent and we are all becoming accustomed to it.  However, the economic difficulties and lifestyle necessities still are not changing and in a way, remain in the era of a father and mother raising a child.  In State College, 3.4% had a female householder with no husband present.  Males had a median income of $34,388 versus $27,219 for females.  46.9% of the population and 9.7% of families are below the poverty line.  Poverty and single women locally are facing many difficulties.  It is too much of a struggle and worries on the mother, when she knows all the requirements she has to handle on her own and cannot do anything about it.  To pay for a child’s education, insurance, health, and basic needs are already high enough prices in this world and that just involves her child, not even her.  With the economy suffering more each day and to be able to give a child a fairly safe and good daycare or college, what will single women have to do to achieve this without running into problems?

Viagra vs. Birth Control

When it comes to sexual needs, the healthcare industry caters towards the needs of men more than it does the to needs of women.  Did you know that the majority of healthcare companies will cover Viagra but not birth control?  For women who cannot afford birth control, this makes being sexually active very risky.  If a woman can't afford birth control, she certainly can't afford a baby.  So what is the difference between a medication that makes it possible for men to be sexually active and a medication that makes it possible for women?

Sex Ed: Ideal or Real?

Some people believe that teaching "abstinence only" to kids in junior high is the only acceptable way of enforcing Sex Ed.  My question to them is this:  Since when have kids ever listened to their parents or teachers?  If you teach them abstinence and nothing else, such as methods of birth control, where will they learn this vital information later on?  Also, if you don't even teach them what sex is, they won't understand why they should practice abstinence.  As teenagers, they will want to have sex.  And they will have sex.  There's no way around that.  Ideally, at such a young age, parents would prefer their kids stay abstinent, but in reality, this is unlikely to happen.  So, should we stick to what is ideal or what is real?
